CLEVELAND
COMMISSION
FOR WELLS
THE TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
OF THE CLOSURE
IS FAST APPROACHING.
WHERE ARE WE TODAY?
The offer of HIIK to purchase the campus has been accepted by Wells College, but challenges remain. Read about what still lies ahead in the following notes by a CCFW observer at the recent virtual hearing in Cayuga County Superior Court on 11 March 2026.
The initial focus of the Cleveland Commission for Wells was to prevent the closure of the college. But as alumnae, we found that we had no legal standing to request an injunction, and therefore we decided to seek answers from the college’s administration and Board of Trustees through our lawyers. We received none. As we watched our beloved campus grow silent, be shut down and virtually abandoned, we decided that the best course of action lay in a radical move. We still seek to restore Wells College as an academic institution, utilizing its historic buildings and rich history to continue its strong liberal arts focus, taking full advantage of the biodiversity and ecological resources of the lake and surrounding land.
